Skip the crossover and/or SUV hate, please.
I’m at my friend’s house this weekend, and he and I test drove this 2012 Nissan Murano for him today. Thoughts?

It has a CVT but it didn’t annoy me as much as the others I’ve experienced. It is also fully loaded and has a lot of cool features for a 2012.

Ugliest of the CUVs. That's all I got.

Glorious VQ35DE power attached to a CVT :(
They’re a fairly comfy drive.

There is a CrossCabriolet.

I've heard nothing bad about them. You either like the styling or you don't they are no better or worse than a comparable vehicle. Kind of vanilla with an interesting face.

You can get them without a roof.

Currently the only reliable car Nissan produces (from MY2012 forward). Yay! Nissan puts as much effort into the Murano as it does the Maxima, so it’s a good deal.

Bad gas mileage
Difficult to work on
Generally reliable
Good interior; SL is good value.
AWD is fairly worthless.
I had an 03, but same platform/drivetrain. I assume the xtronic cvt got better in both hardware and software.

Grandparents had one
Put 120k miles on it within 5 years
No major problems
Bad gas mileage

If only they made it a convertible. ..

I know 2 people who have them, both vehicles had a CVT failure.

The gas mileage and hating the way the CVT drove took it off my list.

I like the look of the Murano, but I wish it was an all-around better car. It’s kind of blah. I’d say check out a Santa Fe, CX5, Escape, Sorento, or even a RAV4 instead.

For what it’s worth, I have 3 Nissan NV200 vans in my work fleet, all with over 160k hard miles on them and haven’t had one problem yet with their CVTs.

My sister had one and hated it. Bad Gas mileage and not great at holding kid gear.
When I tried driving it I had a hard time figuring out where the car started and ended, very vague steering.

I'd be wary of that one due to the minor to moderate accident damage on the carfax.

Ditto on everything, my mom has had her ‘03 LS for 100k of the 128k on it. CV joints are a weakspot and changing the headlight bulbs on the driver’s side is painfully difficult. On the flip side, interior is pretty well-designed and comfortable for just about every roadtrip it’s done.

Nope. Terrible. No thank you, also 2000s Nissan reliability is sud par to say the least,

Known for CVT issues later in life. CVT need fluid changed more often. Fuel economy is not good. Towing sucks (towed a boat with one for a while) Engine bay is kinda cramped in terms of basic maintenance stuff

Yeah, I brought that up.

It’s a stupid crossover and I hat-... er...
I actually have always really loved the styling and the interiors of them. They really are pretty in a segment of awful, drab, miserable, vanilla, beige, boring... sorry, slipping into hate again...
They’re decently reliable, they move people and cargo comfortably from A to B, and the gas mileage is mediocre. Aside from the looks, they’re just like any of the hundreds of other crossovers on the market. But they do look very nice. If I had to choose between this and my wife’s boring, drab, awful 2016 RAV4, I'd choose this all day.

Lots of positives for features and functionality, but a few critical negatives, too. Most notably, the catalytic converters last just past the emissions warranty (8/80k) and aren’t covered by aftermarket warranties, and transmissions - especially the CVTs - have an alarming failure rate, such that Nissan has quietly upped the powertrain warranty on certain models and years because of the number of complaints, which is nice of them to do, but when it takes about 3-5 weeks to diagnose, get corporate approval, order, and install the replacement, the inconvenience is pretty off-putting. Plus few dealerships will cover a rental for that long of a period.
Consider a Ford Edge/Lincoln MKX, Mazda CX-9, Toyota Highlander, and certain Honda Pilots/Acura MDXs instead.

I have driven that newest model a couple times as rentals - the CVT really bugged me, and I own another brand car with a CVT so it’s not just general CVT hate. The interior seemed a little cheap for the segment. And it isn’t nearly as big inside as the Honda or Toyota comparable. But I always thought the exterior styling was cool.
